(KTRS) – Illinois is one of ten states where lawmakers are making a push for public colleges to be debt-free.
Bills or resolutions are being announced by Democrats in battleground states and those that hold early presidential primaries. The plans explore several different options as college debt reaches near crisis levels. Some options make federal aid more available, increase local scholarships and grants, and finding new ways to contain costs.
The lawmakers hope to make the issue a priority in the 2016 election.
