St. Louis, MO  (KTRS)  Mother’s Day may have an extra special meaning this year at the St. Louis Zoo.

Pregnant rhino Kati Rain is due any day now. This will be the second offspring for Kati Rain and father Ajabu, both which are considered critically endangered rhinos. In anticipation of the new arrival and in honor of Mother’s Day, the St. Louis Zoo is featuring great mothers of the animal world (and their babies) on its website stlzoo.org and social media sites this week.

Katie Rain and Ajabu’s first off spring, Ruka, was born on January 14, 2011. He was the first black rhinoceros to be born at the Saint Louis Zoo in 20 years. When Ruka was 4-years-old, he moved to the Oregon Zoo to pair with a compatible female. This was by the recommendation of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is a program to manage a genetically healthy population of black rhinos in North American zoos. Meanwhile, Ruka’s parents live at River’s Edge of the St. Louis Zoo.
