(KTRS)- UPDATE: Everyone is safe after a bomb scare at Mercy Hospital on Monday.
The incident began this morning when a hospital employee saw something suspicious inside a mental patient’s bags. That is when the employee took the bags outside, leaving one at the helipad and another on a sidewalk. When the bomb squad responded, they detonated the bag on the helipad and found nothing harmful in the second bag.
During the investigation, Mercy diverted emergency room patients to other facilities and police closed Interstate 270 near the hospital.

The St. Louis Bomb squad has denoted one of the two suspicious packages found at Mercy. The packages were discovered at around 11 this morning one was on the hospital’s helipad and the other on a sidewalk on the hospital campus. The bomb squad detonated the device on the helipad just after 1:15.
The hospital is not under lock down and the hospital is allowing people to leave, but the emergency room itself is closed. Just after 2 p.m., authorities reopened the highway.
