COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – Republican rivals of Missouri gubernatorial candidate Eric Greitens’ slammed him during a debate for not returning $1 million from a donor accused of sexual abuse.
Former House speaker and U.S. attorney Catherine Hanaway said at the Thursday debate in Columbia that Greitens isn’t taking an abused woman’s word for it.
At issue are donations from California venture capitalist Michael Goguen. A woman accused him of sexual abuse and sued him. Goguen denied the allegations. Greitens says he won’t convict people in the court of public opinion.
Greitens faces an August GOP primary against suburban St. Louis businessman John Brunner, Hanaway, and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder. They’re all calling on Greitens to return the donation.
Attorney General Chris Koster, the top Democratic candidate, also criticized Greitens.
