ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis man is accused of abducting a 12-year-old girl off the street as she was walking to school.
Police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that 48-year-old John Billingsley is a stranger to the child. He is charged with child kidnapping and jailed on $100,000 bond.
The girl was walking toward Clay Elementary School on January 8th when, according to police, Billingsley asked the girl to help him find his cellphone. She kept walking to the school, but police say Billingsley grabbed her by the wrist and forced her into a nearby vacant home.
Police say he took her into a room with several mattresses but she was able to escape and run back to school, where she told staff what happened.
