(KTRS) – St. Louis Police say that a dashcam video proves that social media descriptions of a traffic stop were false. The stop in question happened Sunday evening.
Hours after the traffic stop, a Facebook account under the name Melissa Bennett posted a story about the stop, saying her 2 year-old nephew and a five-month old baby were in the car. Bennett then accused the officer of pointing a gun at the family inside the car. Police Chief Sam Dotson says the video shows that the conversation was professional and no guns were drawn.
On Monday night, a group of protesters gathered outside of police headquarters with some in the crowd chanting “Black babies matter.”
In a press conference Wednesday, Dotson said this incident illustrates how vulnerable the public has come to believing social media accounts without checking to see if they are credible.
