St. Louis County, MO  (KTRS)  A man is dead after being shot by an off-duty St. Louis County Police officer.

Police say the 20-year-old man was try ing to break in to the officer’s south county home in the 10000 block of Lakeshire Drive at just before 6 p.m. Saturday.  The suspect attempted to gain entry to the home by throwing a large planter through a glass door according to investigators.  That’s when the officer shot him. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the suspect was known to the family and reportedly had mental problems.

The officer has been place on administrative leave.
