JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Some Missouri delegates to the Democratic National Convention who supported the presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders are reluctant to heed his call to now back the likely Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.
Sanders was met with boos Monday when he suggested to supporters that they need to elect Clinton in order to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Delegate Brent Welder, who has helped organize Sanders volunteers in Missouri, says he joined in the booing. He said Sanders should take back his endorsement of Clinton because of leaked emails appearing to show that national Democratic leaders favored Clinton in the primaries. Welder says he isn’t yet ready to get behind Clinton.
Sanders delegate Jackson Thompson says he literally held his nose at Sanders’ suggestion to support Clinton, but likely will do so.
