JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – A judge is weighing whether a proposal to reinstate campaign contribution limits in Missouri should stay on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce heard arguments Tuesday from opponents who say the measure is unconstitutional. The proposal would cap campaign contribution limits and impose other campaign finance restrictions aimed at preventing political committees from obscuring the source of their money.
Attorney Chuck Hatfield represents opponents of the measure. He argued it would limit free speech and violate the Equal Protection Clause by restricting campaign donations of some corporations and political action committees.
Attorney John Sauer represents the group backing the proposal. He argued voters should have the chance to weigh in on the measure and that legal questions over its constitutionality should be considered after the election.
