ST. LOUIS (AP) – A suburban St. Louis man has been ordered to spend the maximum of 20 years in federal prison for giving his son’s 17-year-old girlfriend the heroin that killed her.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a St. Louis judge sentenced 57-year-old Jerry Harvey on Monday on a heroin-distribution charge. He pleaded guilty in February. Authorities and witnesses have said Harvey supplied heroin to Katherine “Katie” Culley in November 2014 and found her unresponsive the next morning, and that Harvey reported the matter only after taking his son to work.
Harvey has drunken driving convictions, including one involving a crash that caused a death.
In court Monday, U.S. District Judge John Ross called Harvey’s past “reckless” and said the 20-year sentence prosecutors sought was the only appropriate one.
