( KTRS/AP) Legislators are considering a proposal to advise courts on how to deal with custody battles over embryos.
A Missouri House panel on Tuesday reviewed a bill that would direct courts not to allow embryos to be terminated or unused in disputes.
Supporters say some judges are unfairly ruling to get rid of embryos when one donor hopes to utilize them but the other does not. Opponents said the measure would unconstitutionally force people to become parents. The measure was spurred by a St. Louis woman in a legal dispute with her ex-husband over access to two embryos.
Jalesia McQueen says she wants to implant the embryos in herself in an attempt to get pregnant. Her ex-husband wants the embryos destroyed or donated to research or an infertile couple.
