(KTRS/AP) – A week after a Missouri lawmaker proposed classifying sex between a lobbyist and politician as a gift, the Legislature is turning their sights to more realistic changes to ethics laws.
A House committee will consider bills that ban lobbyist gifts to elected officials and would create a waiting period for lawmakers to become lobbyists after leaving office. Missouri currently has the loosest ethics laws in the nation with no limit to lobbyist gifts, the ability for lawmakers to immediately start work as a lobbyist after leaving office, and no cap on campaign contributions.
Committee approval is one of the first steps needed to move the legislation forward.
