(KTRS) A radioactive container that went missing last year has been found in Wayne County. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency says that Wayne County Well Surveys Inc. of Fairfield reported the device’s recovery on Friday.
The radioactive “well logging source holder” contains americium, a highly radioactive metal. It went missing in October 2015.
The discovery, made by a farmer, came one day after the state agency issued a preliminary order seeking to impose a $25,500 penalty on the southeastern Illinois company.
IEMA also wants the company to pay the nearly $53,000 cost of searching for the device. The search spanned 18 counties in Illinois and Indiana.
