Stanton, MO (KTRS) Meremec Caverns most likely won’t be open in time for the holiday weekend.
Officials say this is because of potential harmful vapors that the EPA discovered last year. Meramec Caverns president and director of operations Lester Turilli says he has been frustrated by the pace of the Environmental Protection Agency’s oversight of the cleanup of trichloroethylene after vapors measured above a level of health concern. The opening is pending test results.
TCE is a solvent used mainly to remove grease from metal parts. It also is an ingredient in adhesives, paint removers and other products. It is classified as a carcinogen.
