(KTRS) – Mayor Francis Slay is in Jefferson City today speaking against a proposal that would end the earnings tax in St. Louis and Kansas City.
Currently, anyone who lives or works in St. Louis pays a 1-percent tax. Proceeds from the tax make up one-third of the city’s budget. Senator Kurt Schaefer, who is running for Attorney General, is behind the measure and says the tax is unconstitutional and stifles economic growth.
Losing the tax could cause serious funding issues in St. Louis as the city grapples with the expected loss of revenue from the Rams moving to Los Angeles.
Voters must reauthorize the tax later this year or it will be phased out over the next ten years.
The Senate committee did not vote on the bill today.
