SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois Republicans sidestepped mention of their party’s presidential nominee Wednesday to focus on state races.
GOP standard-bearer Donald Trump was mentioned only sparingly. U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk openly disavows him because of contentious comments Trump has made. Gov. Bruce Rauner has steadfastly refused to say whether he’ll vote for the New York real estate developer.
Mike Schwerer is a Trump supporter from Peoria. He says he was disappointed at the lack of focus on Trump. He says Republicans “need to get out and vote for the presidential nominee.”
Kirk skirted questions about who he’ll support instead of Trump. He says Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are “such bad choices” that it puts more emphasis on putting a “pro-Illinois candidate” in the Senate. He is being challenged by Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth.
Illinois GOP distances itself from Trump. Smooth move, but about that Governor of ours… https://t.co/MdOFQdYT0e
