ST. LOUIS (AP) – An Indiana company has agreed to pay more than $800,000 in civil penalties for repeatedly discharging polluted water and sewage into the Ohio River in southern Illinois.

A voluntary settlement approved on Tuesday requires American Commercial Lines Inc. and its subsidiary ACBL Transportation Services LLC to pay $805,440 to the federal government.

The Jeffersonville-based company was charged in January with committing more than 500 separate Clean Water Act violations from 2007 through 2014 at its Cairo, Illinois barge cleaning facility.

Federal prosecutors called many of the violations “egregious,” including 16 instances in which the amount of fecal coliform found in discharges were more than 100 times higher than allowed. Other tests showed chlorine levels in wastewater more than 700 times the permit limit.
