SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois motorists will stop receiving mailed notifications about vehicle emissions testing, starting with vehicle owners whose license plates expire at the end of March.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Secretary of State’s office announced the temporary policy changes regarding vehicle emission test notification and vehicle renewal procedures on Tuesday.

A press release from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says the agency was forced to suspend mailing of vehicle emissions test notices due to the lack of a state budget.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White decided to temporarily allow license plate renewals for vehicle owners who haven’t taken the emissions test. His office will resume regular vehicle registration procedures when the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency resumes mailing out vehicle emissions test notices.
