( KTRS ) Illinois has become the latest state to grant legal protections to nannies, house keepers and in-home caregivers with a domestic workers “bill of rights”
Gov. Bruce Rauner approved the law earlier this month.
The new Illinois rules extend sexual harassment protection, minimum-wage pay and a guaranteed one day off in a seven-day work week for domestic workers.
There are an estimated 2 million such workers nationwide. Illinois is the first Midwest state to create such laws. Advocates believe that now it has received backing from Illinois’ Republican governor, it could soon be seen elsewhere.
The Illinois law takes effect in 2017.
