ST. LOUIS (AP) – A former St. Louis police officer charged with first-degree murder in a 2011 shooting of a 24-year-old man after a chase is free on bond.
Jason Stockley stepped out of jail Wednesday, a day after a St. Louis judge set his bail at $1 million, with the requirement that Stockley post at least 10 percent of it. That amount was covered by St. Louis Police Officers’ Association.
Prosecutors allege Stockley was on duty when he first fired at Anthony Lamar Smith after police say Stockley witnessed a drug deal. Authorities say that after the Stockley and his partner used their police SUV to stop Smith’s car after a chase, Shockley approached Smith’s car and fired five times into its driver’s side. Smith died after being hit by each round.
