CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) – Former two-term state Sen. Betty Sims of St. Louis County, a Republican who championed efforts to improve the health of women and children, has died.
Sims’ daughter Molly Sims Weber told The Associated Press that Sims died Monday of complications due to pancreatitis. She was 80.
Sims served in the Senate from 1995 to 2003, representing the central part of St. Louis County. She shepherded legislation combating child abuse. She led legislative victories to require insurance companies to cover reconstructive breast surgery and increase the state allowance of beds for those with Alzheimer’s Disease and mental health issues.
She also helped lead St. Louis groups aimed at mentoring girls.
Sims is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. William A. Sims Jr., two daughters, five grandchildren and other relatives.
Funeral services will be Friday in Clayton.
