Ferguson, MO (KTRS) The city of Ferguson is extending its deadline for residents interested in filling the council seat of the late Brian Fletcher.
Residents in Ferguson’s Ward 2 now have until Friday to submit an application. Applications can be submitted on the City’s website, www.fergusoncity.com or dropped off at Ferguson City Hall by 5 p.m. on Friday.
Fletcher died January 10th as a result of a heart condition. The city council has 30 days to appoint a replacement or that duty falls to the mayor.
The council voted 3-2 in favor of appointing a black nominee on January 26th, with the three black members supporting her and the two white members supporting a white nominee. But City Attorney Stephanie Karr said four votes are needed to name a replacement.
“This is in no way a reflection on the residents who have already filed, but this will give an opportunity to those individuals who were thinking about filing one last chance,” said Ferguson Mayor James Knowles, III.
The person appointed will fill Fletcher’s remaining term that will end in April, 2018.
