The FBI has “a lot of forensic electronics that we don’t have,” says St. Louis Police Captain Steven Mueller. Mueller says one advantage the agency has is the capability to enhance a number of surveillance videos which could lead to a break in a rash of robberies, assaults and carjackings.
The latest carjacking happened in broad daylight at a parking garage yesterday where a Barnes-Jewish Hospital employee had her purse, cell phone and SUV taken after being confronted by a armed attacker. She was not physically harmed. The perpetrator got away.
The number of robberies , combined with carjackings, has totaled 43 since the beginning of this month. They have been concentrated in an area that includes south St. Louis neighborhoods , Forest Park and Carondelet Park.
A task force of at least a half dozen city detectives along with F.B.I. investigators think this is an organized crime spree by two or three groups.
The inclusion of the F.B.I. opens the door to federal charges against the attackers.
