East St. Louis, IL (KTRS) The East St. Louis Jail is closed following a report of a potential health hazard.
This comes after an unidentified officer filed a complaint Monday. City manager Courtney Logan told the Belleville News-Democrat on Tuesday that the complaint is unfounded and under investigation, but the employees and prisoners were moved in the interest of health and safety.
Logan says the jail has flooded numerous times and there may be mold. The jail had previously been professionally cleaned by an industrial environmental cleaning service earlier this year. This was the first complaint received since that cleaning has occurred.
“It will remain closed until such time as a health inspection can be made what, if any, remedial
measures need to be taken.” said Logan.
In the meantime, prisons are being held at the St. Clair County Jail.
