ST. LOUIS (KTRS ) A Democrat state lawmaker from St. Louis is asking for a state investigation into conditions at the St. Louis Medium security facility, otherwise known as the workhouse. State Representative Josh Peters, in whose district the jail is located, says conditions at the St. Louis workhouse could be unconstitutional. He says inmates have several complaints, in addition to the extreme heat. The workhouse has no air conditioning and temperatures inside this week have exceeded 100 degrees.
Peters says inmates claim they have been bitten by rodents, and others have cited mold. Peters says he doesn’t want to make workhouse conditions luxurious but he wants to make sure they’re constitutional.
In a letter to House Speaker Todd Richardson, Peters says conditions at the workhouse warrant a state investigation. He also has written to the state director of health services asking to study the conditions at the workhouse.
