St. Louis, MO (KTRS) The civil unrest over insufficient air conditioning at the Medium Security Institution seems to have paid off.
On Monday, five portable air conditioning units were delivered to the jail, commonly known as the City Workhouse. This was by order of St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson.
“I support air conditioning at MSI for the health and safety of everyone who is in that jail,” said Krewson. “Once my administration determined that temporary air conditioning was a viable solution, I ordered that temporary air conditioning units be installed as soon as possible.”
This issue sparked a protest on Friday night. About 150 gathered outside of the facility at 7600 North Hall Street to voice concerns for the inmates during the dangerous heat that reached a record-setting 108 degrees on Saturday. Police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd during the demonstration.
Krewson’s office said the air conditioning units are expected to be fully installed by the end of the week.
