(KTRS) – The Meramec Caverns remain closed after a possible contamination problem.
The Post-Dispatch reports that the attraction closed last month and hopes to reopen in the coming weeks. For years, the owners of the caves struggled with unacceptable levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE. The compound is used in solutions for a variety of cleaning tasks, from degreasing metal parts to spot removers.
The EPA is crediting the owners for proactively closing the site so they can install protections against the chemical.
