COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – The faculty council for the University of Missouri is urging the selection of someone with an academic background as it searches for a new leader for the four-campus system.

The Columbia Missourian reports that the council discussed the search process Thursday. The council says another priority is someone with an academic background and a willingness to listen to students and faculty.

French professor Flore Zéphir says she wants the new president to have plenty of experience in higher education. Zephir says she doesn’t think someone coming from the business model is quickly able to become effective as an academic leader.

Other council members expressed a preference that the new president has at least a doctorate.
Forums seeking public input on the search strategy will be held next week.
