SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A southwest Missouri lawmaker is proposing a bill that would let people buy guns one day a year without paying taxes on them.

Republican Representative Jered Taylor of Nixa says Missouri residents want to protect their families but might not be able to afford guns if they have to pay taxes on them.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that under his proposal, gun purchases would be tax-free on the Saturday after the Fourth of July each year.

Representative Stacey Newman, a St. Louis Democrat, calls the measure ill-conceived and says guns make people less safe. She also counters Taylor’s contention that armed Missourians can deter mass shootings, saying that eight hours of training isn’t enough to prepare someone to respond to an active shooter situation.
