St. Louis, MO (KTRS) An investigation is underway after a suspect died while in St. Louis police custody.
Police say the 27-year-old man was arrested in south St. Louis Tuesday for trespassing. He was taken to a holding cell at central patrol where police say he attempted to hang himself with his sweatpants.
Police Chief Sam Dotson says that’s when officers intervened. “They get him.. the sweatpants from around his neck .. and he continues to struggle with officers. As they’re attempting to put handcuffs on him to gain control, he falls to his knees and hits the bench that is inside of the cell.”
EMT’s provided aid to the suspect and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name hasn’t been released.
