(KTRS) – Missouri voters may have several votes to cast next year on the legalization of marijuana for different reasons.
One plan to allow for medical marijuana is in the petition stage, supporters are working to gather 168,000 legal signatures to place the initiative on the 2016 ballot. Support for medical marijuana has been difficult to come by in the Midwest–only Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan have approved plans. And in the south, no states have legalized the drug for medicinal use. Adding to the obstacles, there are competing efforts to legalize medical cannabis.
Organizers of the petition hope that a presidential election means increased support for their plan. If approved, the proposal backed by Show Me Cannabis and New Approach Missouri would levy an additional 4 percent tax on marijuana with the proceeds going to fund health care for Missouri veterans.
