ST. LOUIS (AP) – Eight Chicago residents have been indicted by a federal grand jury for the smash-and-grab crime at a Saks Fifth Avenue in suburban St. Louis.

The U.S. Attorney’s office in St. Louis on Wednesday announced the indictments. All eight suspects are in their 20’s. Illinois State Police say they are also under investigation for similar crimes in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Frontenac police say the crime on Nov. 26 at Plaza Frontenac in St. Louis County lasted only seconds. Ten to 12 people walked into the store soon after it opened and smashed shelves to steal 16 handbags worth nearly $60,000. They fled in two vehicles into Illinois.

Eight suspects were caught after spike strips disabled their SUV. Frontenac police say two to four suspects in a Nissan got away and are still at large.
