CHICAGO (AP) – The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting three pregnant women are among 46 cases of Zika virus in the state.

Department officials say five pregnant women are awaiting test results from the Centers for Disease Control to determine if they have the virus. Zika, which is spread to people through mosquito bites, can cause severe birth defects.
Nationwide, the CDC reports as of July 28, there are 479 pregnant women infected with the Zika virus.
Illinois health officials say current state Zika cases are travel associated.

Dr. Allison Arwady of the Chicago Department of Public Health says the type of mosquito that spreads Zika isn’t resident in Illinois.

Public health officials advise anyone returning from a country where Zika virus is circulating and have symptoms in the two weeks following their return should seek medical attention.
