SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Federal lawmakers are demanding that Puerto Rico quickly privatize its bankrupt power company in a bid to end its ongoing turmoil and allow others to provide stable electricity post-Hurricane Maria.
Frustration grew as consultants and local and federal officials testified during Wednesday’s hearing on the management crisis at Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority held by the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources in Washington, D.C.
Republican Rep. Don Young of Alaska urged the U.S. Department of Energy to set a timeline on how long it would take to privatize the island’s power company, saying that five or 10 years is “too damn long.”
