KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — President Donald Trump is headed to Kansas City to speak at the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Trump’s arrival Tuesday comes just one day after the Senate confirmed Pentagon official Robert Wilkie to be secretary of Veterans Affairs following months of tumult. Wilkie will be tasked with fulfilling Trump’s promise to fire bad VA employees and steer more patients to the private sector. Wilkie has vowed to “shake up complacency” at the VA.
Trump also will speak Tuesday at a fundraising luncheon for Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley, who is seeking to unseat incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill. His visit to the Midwest also will take him Thursday to a steel-producing factory in the St. Louis suburb of Granite City, Illinois.
