St. Louis, MO – Saint Louis FC slumped to a 1-2 defeat against the Charlotte Independence in front of 4,107 at Toyota Stadium.
Saint Louis FC opened the scoring in the 4th minute through Jose Angulo before Charlotte answered in the 9th minute with a goal from Enzo Martinez. Martinez completed his brace after an assist from Yann Ekra in the 29th minute to take all three points back to Charlotte.
The first half saw Saint Louis FC get off to the fast start they have been known for at home with Angulo notching his third goal of the year after a turnover from the Charlotte defense in the 4th minute. Charlotte quickly responded with a long ball that cut open the STLFC defense and was cleverly worked by Martinez to slot underneath goalkeeper Devala Gorrick. STLFC started to regain possession and Angulo had a shot from 25 yards that hit the top of the crossbar in the 21st minute. Charlotte then took the lead in the 29th minute as Ekra picked up the ball and found Martinez in space on the right to complete his brace.
New-signing Tony Walls made his debut as a substitute to start the second which saw less action in front of goal and more disciplinary action as four players picked up yellow cards. Saint Louis FC’s best chance to level the score came in stoppage time as Christian Volesky was played in behind the defense but the ball was cleared by the goalkeeper before he could get the final touch.
