WASHINGTON (AP) – Speaker Paul Ryan is expressing confidence that House Republicans will re-elect him to his post for the new Congress. But with hard-right conservatives talking about possibly replacing him, Ryan is noting that the decision is up to GOP lawmakers.
The Wisconsin Republican was asked on Fox News Tuesday whether he’d step aside if House Republicans no longer wanted him as their leader.
Ryan said he holds his post “at the pleasure of our members.” But he said he’s happy to serve in the job and added, “I’m very confident where I stand with our members.”
Congress returns to Washington the week after Election Day, Nov. 8.
Some conservatives have said Republicans should reconsider their leadership team. Some are unhappy Ryan distanced himself from GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
