The St. Louis Cardinals and G.M. John Mozeliak put to rest any drama before tomorrow’s activation of Jhonny Peralta, by optioning out Kolten Wong on Monday afternoon. Peralta should be in tomorrow night’s line-up in Cincinnati, presumably playing third base.
Wong was more than likely among a list of 3 candidates to be shipped out, joining Jeremy Hazelbaker, and Greg Garcia. Sending out Hazelbaker would’ve drastically limited the Cardinals’ outfield depth, and outfield defense for that matter. Garcia has shown to be a more than capable coming off the bench or starting at one of three different infield positions. Not to mention Garcia coming through in the clutch during Matt Carpenter’s paternity list absence.
The 25-year old Wong, who signed a new 5 year $25.5 million deal before the season started, will have a chance to right his ship at Memhis. Wong was hitting .222 with just 1 home run and 6 errors in 2016 so far.
