(KTRS) – Drivers are facing steeper fines for infractions like speeding on a stretch of I-70 in Wentzville.

MoDOT designated the highway from Route A and Wentzville Parkway a travel safe zone. Transportation officials say there have been more fatal accidents on that section of highway than other similar areas. Fox 2 reports that signs are up in the travel safe zone. Fines for speeding and other infractions are doubled in the zone.

After one year, MoDOT will review the zone and determine if it needs to be extended.
