Mike Matheny’s future job security, became far more certain today, as the Cardinals extended their skipper through the 2020 season.
Matheny has delivered an average of 92 wins per season since taking over for Tony La Russa in 2012. The former catcher made the playoffs in each of his first four seasons on the job. 2016 was the first year in which Matheny’s Cardinals were left out of baseball’s postseason. The 46-year old has made three trips to the NLCS, and one World Series appearance in 2013.
The Cardinals also finalized their coaching staff for the 2017 season earlier today. Palm Beach manager Oliver Marmol has been promoted to first base coach on the Major League club. Bill Mueller, who coached first base this past year, will return to the position he held in 2015, assistant hitting coach.
