INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Ted Cruz is looking to Indiana’s governor to help stop Donald Trump’s march to the Republican presidential nomination.
Cruz said Friday that he’d “enthusiastically welcome” Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s support before the state’s primary Tuesday. Cruz needs a victory after getting swept by GOP front-runner Donald Trump in five Northeastern states earlier in the week.
Cruz told reporters on Friday that Pence is expected to make a major announcement around noon.
A Pence endorsement would mark a setback for Trump, who has appealed to the governor not to make an endorsement.
An Indiana victory would all but ensure Trump becomes the presumptive nominee before the GOP’s national convention. Even with an Indiana loss, however, he could clinch the nomination with a strong performance in California on June 7.
