NEW YORK (AP) – New York City’s mayor and other Democratic officials say Congress is coming up far too short in proposing to reimburse the city $7 million for protecting Trump Tower. It’s a fifth of what New York requested.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that New York City taxpayers “should not be on the hook for 80 percent of the national bill” to protect Republican President-elect Donald Trump and his family.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito called the proposal “outrageous.” Congressional Democrats have also complained.

Stopgap spending legislation unveiled Tuesday in the Republican-led Congress includes $7 million for police overtime costs to protect Trump.
De Blasio has said the city will spend up to $35 million safeguarding the president-elect from Election Day on Nov. 8 to his Jan. 20 inauguration.
