Kirkwood, MO (KTRS) A remembrance ceremony will be held tonight in observance of the tenth anniversary of the deadly shooting at Kirkwood City Hall.
On the night of February 8, 2008, Charlie “Cookie” Thornton barged into a Kirkwood City Council meeting and opened fire. Police Sgt. William “Bill” Biggs , Officer Tom Ballman, Councilwoman Connie Karr, Councilman Michael Lynch, and Public Works Director Kenneth Yost were all killed that night. Then sitting Mayor Mike Swoboda was also injured in the gunfire. He died several months later. Todd Smith, a Suburbans Journals reporter, was also shot, but survived his injuries.
Thornton was killed when police returned fire. His actions that night were a result of long standing grievances he had with city officials.
The remembrance ceremony will take place on the steps on the east side of City Hall, 139 South Kirkwood Road, at 7 p.m.
