A key piece to the St. Louis Cardinals’ puzzle for 2016 is finally available. The team activated catcher Brayan Pena from the 15-day disabled list today. To make room for Pena, catcher Eric Fryer was designated for assignment.
Pena had been recovering from left knee surgery since early April, and is yet to make his Cardinals’ debut. He’s hit a paltry .192 between Springfield and Memphis during his rehab stint. But he is expected to give the Cardinals added stability at the catching position, and more days off for Yaider Molina, who has played in 71 of the first 75 games for the Cardinals this year.
Fryer had success in the rare moments he saw the field, hitting .368 with 5 RBI.
