ST. LOUIS (KTRS) An iconic downtown Chicago tavern is taking on a St. Louis potato chip manufacturer over the rights to the name Billy Goat. The Billy Goat Chip Company of St. Louis has been making potato chips since 2009. Recently, the company decided to branch out …and it entered the Chicago market. That’s where it butted heads with the popular Billy Goat Tavern, which has been selling its burgers and its beer in local Chicago supermarkets, and has been thinking about adding its own potato chips to that list.
The Billy Goat Tavern became a pop culture landmark years ago in the famous “cheeburger-cheeburger” skit on Saturday Night Live. Now, however, the tavern owners say customers are confusing the Billy Goat chips from St. Louis with their tavern … and they’ve gone to court to straighten out matters. Grandson of the founder, Bill Sianis, told KTRS News his lawyer won’t let him comment on the case. There’s no comment from the Billy Goat Chip Company either.
