JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Democrats are calling on Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley to drop an appeal of a ruling that struck down parts of Missouri’s voter photo ID law.

U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay in a Monday statement said Hawley is appealing to “suppress the vote of minorities, the disabled and the rural poor who are most likely to vote for his opponent.” Hawley is trying to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in the Nov. 6 election.

A judge blocked a requirement in the law that voters lacking valid photo IDs sign a sworn statement and present another form of ID to cast regular ballots. Hawley appealed.

Attorney general spokeswoman Mary Compton said they’re worried the change will cause confusion in the election and says the office will continue to defend the law.
