ST. LOUIS (KTRS) A Memorial Day tradition in St. Louis for four decades … the Gypsy Caravan … has come to an end. The sponsor of the annual flea market and crafts fair, the St. Louis Symphony, says on its website that in recent years, staging the Gypsy Caravan became a struggle in the face of continued shopper and revenue decline and increased efforts needed to produce the event. As a result, the Symphony says it has decided to retire the Gypsy Caravan. The event has moved over the decades, first at the old Arena on Oakland Avenue and then at the UMSL campus and more recently at the Family Arena. The symphony says the Gypsy Caravan raised more than $4 million dollars during its 45-year run.
