Saint Louis FC fell to a 1-0 defeat on the road against first-placed Charleston Battery on Saturday night.
Both sides were frustrated in the first half with possession not materializing into clear scoring opportunities. Charleston took advantage of a free kick situation in the 62nd minute with Justin Portillo providing the delivery to Forrest Lasso to head into the back of the net.
The first half started brightly for Charleston with a number of chances that were well-saved by STLFC goalkeeper Adam Grinwis, who was making his second start of the season after impressing against Orlando City B. In the 16th minute, Lasso was shown the yellow card for a strong tackle on STLFC’s Sebastion Dalgaard while Mats Bjurman picked up a yellow card in the 38th minute. Charleston forward Romario Williams had a shot that was palmed away by Grinwis in the 39th minute that was the last significant action going into halftime.
The second half saw Saint Louis FC make a pair of substitutions and continue to dominate possession while Charleston created chances on the counterattack. Charleston broke the deadlock from free kick in the 62nd minute as Portillo crossed the ball from 30 yards out to find Lasso around the penalty spot to head the ball past Grinwis. The next clear opportunity came in the 82nd minute as Charleston had successive shots saved and were denied by the crossbar. Despite the attack shown by Saint Louis FC, the match finished 1-0 to Charleston.
