Mike Matheny trots out a primarily right-handed hitting line-up to face LHP Adam Morgan tonight at Busch. Morgan was very generous to right-handed sticks a season ago, allowing a .281/.320/.500 slash line. Tonight’s line-up also grants the wish of many observers, to move Aledmys Diaz up in the batting order. Matheny did not indicate that this move was a sign of things to come, more done out of necessity with Matt Carpenter getting the night off.
“He’s taken good at-bats, he’ll take the walk when he gets it. He’s taken good at-bats against lefties,” explained Matheny on Diaz hitting on the one line. “He seems as good a candidate as anybody right now.”
The other glaring difference tonight is Yadier Molina getting a start at 1B. He’s the latest name to jump into the conversation at the cold corner. It also ensured that no lefty would be in the starting line-up tonight for the Cardinals. It also gives a Molina a day off of sorts, while still keeping his hot bat front and center.
