CITY Sets MLS Record for Expansion Side with 5th Consecutive Win
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis CITY SC (CITY) romped over Real Salt Lake (RSL) 4-0 this past weekend for their fifth consecutive win to start the season. A record for a MLS expansion team. The overall MLS record is held by Kansas City with seven.
The game began with a scoreless first half in sub 30 degree temperatures. Keeper and CITY captain Roman Burki made a flurry of saves near the end of the first half to keep St. Louis level at the break.
The 2nd half was all St. Louis as they broke the game open in the 47th minute. Striker Nicolas Gioacchini pounced on a bouncing ball in traffic inside the 18 yard box to give CITY the lead. This let the floodgates open for the visitors. In the 61st minute, Brazilian Joao Klauss added his 4th goal on the year, and followed it up with another just 5 minutes later. The second goal came on an intercepted pass with the CITY star scoring on a partial break. Swede Rasmus Alm opened his MLS account off a pass from Edu Lowen, sending a ball off RSL keeper Zack MacMath from the edge of the 6 yard box to make it 4-0.
The win, not only gave CITY their 5th win in a row, but it was also the 2nd consecutive shutout for Roman Burki. Joao Klauss’s brace of goals gave him 5 goals in 5 games and an impressive performance from Gioacchini has garnered USMNT talk for the striker who was left unprotected by Orlando City in the expansion draft.
St. Louis takes on Minnesota United this coming Saturday at CITYPARK with kickoff at 7:30pm.
